Benefits of Ginger - Health Benefits of Ginger Revealed
88One of best known benefits of ginger: ginger for nausea
There are a lot of things I remember about being stuck in bed with the stomach flu when I was a kid in the 1970s -- a black and white portable t.v. with an antenna and shows that were more static than picture, being brought into my room; maybe a new book or toy to pass the time; and a "meal" of ginger ale and dry toast.
As a parent, I too tried to comfort my children when they had an upset stomach. Luckily for them, they got color t.v. with hundreds of cable channels, perhaps a new toy or book if the illness was prolonged, and their choice of soda. It was not until years later that it occurred to me that the healing properties of my mother's soda regimen were not in the fizz of the soda, but were in fact from the ginger in the ginger ale.
With over 200 substances in the oils of ginger, it seems there are numerous benefits of ginger, that go beyond the age-old use of ginger for nausea. Ginger health benefits even show promise killing some types of cancer cells according to some studies. Since it is readily available in grocery stores and easily found as a whole root in the produce section, as a powder in the spice aisle, or as an ingredient in food and drinks, it is worth trying out.
Benefits of ginger go beyond just using ginger for nausea
Ginger can provide health benefits for the following conditions:
- Morning sickness
- Motion sickness
- Inflammation
- Heartburn
- Nausea and upset stomach
- Migraine headaches
- Colon & ovarian cancer
Ginger and morning sickness
Ginger, it seems, is one of the best morning sickness remedies. And trust me, if you've ever been desperate to figure out how to stop morning sickness, you're willing to try anything to make it go away. So, why not give ginger a try? According to Obstetrics and Gynecology and the review of multiple studies about taking ginger for morning sickness relief, taking ginger for morning sickness is considered effective and safe for the both the mother and unborn child. But it is recommended that pregnant women use fresh ginger root and not the powdered form. If the powdered form is used it should not exceed the recommended powdered ginger doses for pregnant women.
Caution: All pregnant women should always consult their doctor before taking ginger.
Ginger for motion sickness
For motion sickness sufferers, especially those that get seasick, taking ginger for motion sickness may provide relief. In fact, studies show that ginger is more effective than taking the popular over-the-counter medicine Dramamine.
Ginger can be found in some drinks
Ginger as an anti-inflammatory
Inflammation in the body is a bad thing for many reasons. But many arthritis sufferers who use ginger to treat their pain and discomfort, can attest to the fact that ginger often helps relieve chronic inflammation and pain. A study of over 200 hundred patients with osteoarthritis of the knee revealed that those taking ginger extract had less pain and needed to take less pain medication than those receiving a placebo.
Ginger for heartburn, nausea and upset stomach
Ginger's anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea properties not only alleviate the discomfort of heartburn, but help to prevent it, as well. Ginger goes directly to work on the digestive system making it an effective anti-nausea treatment when you are hit with an upset stomach. The compounds in ginger that give it its distinct flavor and smell, gingerols and phenols, are what make this possible. So, if you tend to get heartburn after eating a meal then consume ginger about an hour or so before you eat. As long as you keep your consumption of ginger within recommended doses, no more than four to six grams per day, then you should not have any side effects.
Ginger can be found in some packaged foods
Ginger for colon and ovarian cancer
Gingerol, the active compound in the ginger root may help slow the growth of colorectal tumors. According to Science Daily, less mice injected with colorectal tumor cells that were given gingerol got tumors in the same amount of time as the control group, and the the tumors that some of the gingerol-fed group of mice got were half the size of the control group's tumors. And lab studies involving ovarian cancer cells and ginger conducted by the University of Michigan showed the cancer cells actually dying.
Both of these studies are preliminary and of course colon and ovarian cancer patients should talk to their doctors.
Caution - All patients should consult their doctor prior to taking ginger. Ginger may cause you to bleed more easily so ginger should be avoided for days before any surgeries.
Ginger for migraine headaches
Prostiglandins can cause muscle contractions, one cause of migraines, and ginger may block this action of prostiglandins. Additionally, ginger and its anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea properties may also relieve migraines and their symptoms.
Side effects of ginger use and precautions
In high doses ginger can cause mild heartburn, diarrhea or irritation within the mouth. People with the following conditions should talk to their doctor about the use of ginger:
- Gallstones
- Diabetes
- Heart Disease
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
The following groups of people should not take ginger since it can cause the blood to thin:
- People about to have surgery
- People on blood-thinning medications, including aspirin

I love ginger! Two of my favorite ginger foods/drink - Shiner Bock Ruby Red beer (ginger + grapefruit) and dark chocolate-covered ginger. I also use ginger in stir-fry dishes. Thanks for the info!
Great Hub and very informative. I like ginger ale and ginger snaps and I remember our family doctor recommending ginger ale to help settle upset stomachs when my siblings and I were young and got a stomach flu or other things that caused us to have an upset stomach.
Ginger is everyday spices in my home. I have been using roasted ginger and ginger juice mixed with honey as medicinal formula as long as I can remember .
Anyone know the shelf life of ginger - I have some old spice islands stuff (crushed) and it's probably past fresh by now.
Interesting hub about ginger. I do like to use ginger now and then in a cup of tea. It's a great spice, but it's too bad I didn't know that it helps morning sickness years ago when I had my babies!
The chocolate-covered ginger came from a local combo store/ice cream parlor -- Candilicious and the Chocolate Bar. I am out of town today, but I will look at the ingedients to see what more I can share. I also love Ginger Beer. It is non-alcoholic, but it is great mixed with gin! Gin Gin Fizz!
Dear Ktrapp,
In India especially south India in Kerala there is a festival known as " Onam " This festival is known for lavish feasts daily for 10 days.
in that you are suppose to keep some 110 varieties of dishes.
so as per our ancient history and stories this ginger is
considered equal to 101 dishes plus they keep another 9 normal dishes to manage the traditions. That much value ginger has.
And no doubt as you had explained nicely the benefits of
ginger are plenty specially it is very effective in stomach and your bowel management.
I really appreciate you for putting this informative up in your hubs.
I had voted this up and also useful
With war regards

ginger is also an effective sleep aid. i use 1/2 tsp of ginger powder in a cup of milk (warm and sweetened if you like) at bedtime.
We Indians always knew about it. In Ayurveda, there is lot of mentioning of its benefits. It is quite helpful in cold and cough. It is a regular spice along with garlic in our daily meals. Its use with tea is most common, especially in winters.
I love Ginger tea my mom made the best in the morning.
I've recently developed a taste for ginger and I eat it every other day. Was just wondering, what side effects were you referring to when you said to limit ginger intake to 6 grams a day? I can't picture how much 6 grams is, I might be eating more than that in a day. :O
Excellent hub, well written and well researched and is deserving of "Hub of the Day" - congratulations. My midwife told me to eat 2-3 ginger biscuits before getting up in the morning as I had terrible morning sickness when I was pregnant. It really worked. I was not aware that ginger could help with so many other ailments. Voted up and very useful.
Ginger is commonly used in Chinese cooking recipes, especially for fishing cooking recipes.
ONE MORE, THAT IS VERY AMAZING THING ABOUT GINGER, MIX FIVE OR SIX DROPS OF GINGER JUICE IN WATER AND USE IT FOR BATHING. IT IS REDUCING BODY SMELL.
Ginger is also a good blood thinning agent and is not to be used too often or can preven the blood from clotting, but is absolutely very good to include in diet.
In Jamaica we use it for relieving gas and bloating. Be certain not to use when you have stomach ulcers, it could make the problem worse.
I have used powdered ginger for years in my cooking but used fresh ginger about a week ago in a new recipe. Wow. What a difference. I'll be buying fresh a lot more now. Thanks for all the valuable information.
Ktrapp, congratulations on hub of the day! I knew that ginger was good for the stomach (because of ginger ale) and my Mom used to give it to us for PMS symtoms too in the form of ginger tea. I had never heard of it for a headache. That is a good one that I will keep in mind for the next time someone in my house has a headache. Great hub and thanks for sharing!

Hi there,
Excellent research, with tables and useful tips. Gramma used to cut ginger into pieces and would drop them into a chicken noodle soup. For stomaches and nausea I get my ginger ale from the vending machine. You covered it all.. flagged up!

We love ginger. I have about 3 quarts of home made ginger ale in the fridge right now!

Firstly, congrats on the hub of the day! Secondly, this was really helpful! I've read about using ginger for home remedies but never anything more than that. You should do another hub about recipes and such to use ginger in! Thanks for sharing this :)
I'll second Pinkchic's suggestion about the ginger recipes! I'd love a few new recipes using ginger, which I love!
Congratulations for being chosen Hub of the Day! Very useful article. Here in my country the Philippines the benefits of ginger is very much appreciated. It's widely used in our cuisine and for various other applications as well which some of the comments on this hub have pointed out. One additional use of ginger here, particularly in the more rural areas, is as a charm against evil spirits, much in the same way that garlic is supposed to ward off vampires.
Great hub, thank you for it. Do you make a drink from ginger if you use fresh or how do you consume it? Are there any recipes?
Great hub! I learned a lot reading this. Congrats on getting Hub of the Day!
Hey there, k! Congratulations on Hub of Day! I'm used to ginger in my stir fries and any cooking I do. Of course, of course, of course, as someone who doesn't drink, I'll hit the ginger ale instead of Coke or 7-Up. Ginger ale is much more tasty!
Two staples in my kitchen. Ginger and Garlic the Double. G's Great and Good for you....lol
Congratulations on being selected for the Hub of the Day! I told you this was an Awesome Hub!
JSMatthew~
Very informative hub about the benefits of ginger! I'm actually drinking my morning ginger tea right now (it is said to help with weight loss as well).
To make your own ginger tea, just boil some crushed/sliced ginger stalks in water. Sweeten (with honey) to taste, and chill in the fridge ;)
Congratulations, ktrap! Really good hub! I had to tweet it!

Congratulations, this is a great hub. I love the flavor of ginger and I often use it in cooking to add some spice to pasta sauce and glazes and desserts. Its such a particular and versatile flavor. I also make ginger tea often for myself and my family whenever someone is suffering from digestive problems or menstrual pains. Voted up and awesome!
I love ginger. I remember when I was pregnant with my last child, I always had ginger mint/candy, or tea to keep me from throwing up. Ginger Ale is my favorite soft drink.

Congrats for the hub of the day. Yes, ginger has a lot of benefits good for our health. I grew up with this ginger healing method for any kind of sicknesses such as stomach trouble and travel illnesses. Voted up. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome hub! I used ginger for morning sickness but I didn't know you could get in powered form. It was rough to eat! I'm going to have to get some of that powered stuff for my next migraine. Congrats on your hub of the day!
another use of ginger that i know is for cough and now i learned many more of its health benefits. thanks
I try to eat ginger before going out on fishing trips in the ocean and I've never experienced motion sickness. I've taken dramamine and it hasn't worked so I switched to ginger after hearing about it and surprisingly it works. I didn't know it had as many benefits as this, I will have to look into taking it more than just when going fishing. Great hub!
Well my grandmother always told me the benefits of Ginger , but you have given the detailed description of it here. Frankly i never liked its taste and never preferred to have it mixed in my food even , but i guess i have to rethink about it at least not always but maybe sometimes .
ktrapp, I have found that ginger ale helps with upset stomach. And I also buy Ginger Slices to eat as a snack. I feel it helps with aches from working out too much. Thanks for this well-researched hub. I voted up and useful. Congratulations on being selected for hub of the day!
Your Hub is very informative and spread awareness among hubbers about importance of Ginger concerning its therapeutic benefits! Fortunately, my family use ginger in our home cooking. Your hub deserved the 'Hub of the Day'! Congrats! Way to go!
Ginger is always a part of almost all Filipino cuisines. As a singer, I drink natural ginger tea to sooth my throat after a long period of rehearsals. Meanwhile, the yellow ginger is said to have some positive effects on people with diabetes. However, this information is somewhat considered speculative because no further studies support it. I am glad you included such idea in some of your disclaimers.
Very beautiful hub. Thank you very much for sharing. I learned a lot and appreciated ginger more! :)
I totally agree. I always have ginger tea in my winter menu, it's very healing. This is a must have product for winter healing.
Ginger and garlic is two of the world's healthiest natural food seasoning. The way that I remember is that they both start with the letter G.
